Your Team Already Knows the Problem
You just haven't asked the right questions yet.
The beginning of the year is one of the most underused leadership opportunities there is.
Most owners spend January:
• tweaking goals
• reworking plans
• staring at numbers
• talking at their team
Very few actually stop and bring their employees into the reset.
If you want alignment, buy-in, and better execution this year, start with these three simple questions. Ask them this week.
Not in a meeting where you do all the talking.
Not in a rushed hallway conversation.
Actually ask — and listen.
1. “What’s getting in the way of you doing your job better?”
This isn’t about excuses.
It’s about friction.
Processes that don’t make sense.
Tools that are outdated.
Decisions that take too long.
Rules that exist “because they always have.”
Your team feels these things every day — you don’t.
January is the perfect time to remove friction before it costs you another year of inefficiency.
2. “What do you think we should do differently this year?”
This question does two things:
• It surfaces blind spots
• It gives your team ownership
You don’t have to implement every idea.
But when people feel heard, they show up differently.
Great owners don’t pretend to have all the answers — they build environments where good ideas can surface.
3. “What does success look like for you this year?”
Most employees have no idea what winning actually means.
They’re guessing.
They’re reacting.
They’re trying not to mess up.
Clarity beats motivation every time.
When people know what success looks like — and that it’s achievable — performance follows.
Here’s the key:
This isn’t about being soft. It’s about being smart.
You set the direction.
You make the final calls.
But the fastest way to realignment is letting your team help you refine the path.
New year. New direction.
Bring your people into it.
