The Most Profitable Sign I Ever Put Up
Stop Overthinking Your Marketing
Sometimes the things that grow a business aren’t complicated.
They’re simple. So simple most people overlook them.
Back when I was building my early stores, I didn’t have a big marketing budget.
But I needed one thing:
More people walking through the door.
Around that time, the “Got Milk?” campaign was everywhere. Billboards.
Magazines. TV. I’m sure yall remember.

It was already stuck in people’s heads.
So instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, I leaned into what people were already thinking.
I put up a banner outside my store that said:
“GOT CASH?”
That was it. Two words. And it worked.

Why it worked (and why most marketing doesn’t):
It didn’t try to be clever.
It didn’t try to explain everything.
It entered the conversation already happening in the customer’s mind.
So now, every customer driving or walking by would see the sign and think to themselves…. “well, no I DON’T got cash….” That’s the whole game.
Your customer is already thinking something when they pass your business.
“I’m short on cash”
“I need help with taxes”
“I need to fix my car”
“I need to make more money”
The businesses that win are the ones that meet that thought head-on.
The truth:
Your marketing doesn’t need to be impressive. It needs to be relevant and immediate.
The “Got Cash?” banner worked because:
It was instantly recognizable
It tapped into something already familiar
It spoke directly to a real need
And it made the right person stop
That’s it.
Here’s your challenge this week:
If you had to put up a banner outside your business…
What would it say?
Not what sounds good. Not what looks polished.
👉 What would make the right customer stop, read it, and walk in?
If you’re stuck, start here:
What is your customer already thinking before they find you?
What problem is sitting top of mind for them right now?
How would they say it in plain English?
Then turn that into a simple, direct message. 2 or 3 words.
No fluff. No filler.
