THE EMPLOYEE TRAINING REVOLUTION
The secret weapon for thriving brick & mortar businesses
"The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay."
WHY EMPLOYEE TRAINING MATTERS
In the brick and mortar world, your team isn't just your “workforce”—they're the living embodiment of your brand. Every single interaction they have with customers shapes perception and drives loyalty.
Yet many business owners view training as a one-time event rather than an ongoing investment. The truth? Consistent, quality training isn't just a nice-to-have—it's a competitive necessity.
Training is the bridge between mediocre service and memorable experiences that keep customers coming back again and again.
MY SUCCESS STORY
As you get to know me & my story you will realize that what I’m telling you is proven and tested. I’m not just spouting off things I read in a book or that a professor once told me. (I didn’t go to college for long anyways and barely got outta high school !!)
So, when I worked for UPS we had a training department and no one got to the work area unless they went through vigorous, week long training on top of being hand fed for another week. I saw first hand what GREAT training was.
Fast forward to when I started my first company: I had a GREAT background and solid idea of what proper training looked like. I was growing so fast that training was slipping through the cracks. One of my favorite people of all time (my training supervisor, Laura Faulkner) came to me one day with a quote I leave here for you, because you will know EXACTLY what I mean. She said:
“Boss, all we are doing is allowing these managers to train suck, then suck trains suck more then we are left with an office that sucks the most!!”
She was right. Moving forward we created training manuals, DVD’s, (YES IT WAS THAT LONG AGO), involved HR, and created a full blown McDonald’s University.
That’s right !! I leased a training center and built it out just like a functional and operational store. We ran all new hires through a vigorous training program that included live role play with HR and testing that was implemented by the Training Manager.
All of this was recorded and viewed by DOO before these employees were even allowed in the field. To say we WON is an understatement.

⚠️ THE COST OF TRAINING NEGLECT
What happens without proper employee development?
Without effective training systems, brick and mortar businesses suffer:
🔴 High turnover rates as employees feel undervalued and underprepared
🔴 Inconsistent customer experiences that damage your reputation
🔴 Reduced productivity from team members who don't know best practices
🔴 Wasted resources fixing preventable mistakes and problems
🔴 Missed sales opportunities when staff can't effectively upsell or cross-sell
🔴 Management overwhelm from constant hand-holding and micromanagement
If your training consists of "follow Sarah around for a day," I'm not telling you anything you don't already feel in your business.
"The team you build is the company you build."
THE TRAINING ADVANTAGE
What happens with proper training systems in place?
When you implement robust training programs, you can expect:
🟢 Increased employee confidence leading to better customer interactions
🟢 Higher retention rates as team members feel invested in and valued
🟢 Consistent brand experience across all customer touchpoints
🟢 Improved operational efficiency through standardized best practices
🟢 Greater adaptability when introducing new products or procedures
🟢 Reduced management stress with self-sufficient team members
🟢 Enhanced company culture built around growth and excellence
IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO CREATE EFFECTIVE TRAINING SYSTEMS
Here's a practical guide
1️⃣ Assess Current Knowledge Gaps
Start by identifying where training is most needed:
Observe common customer complaints or issues
Survey employees about where they feel least confident
Review performance metrics to spot inconsistencies
Note which tasks are frequently done incorrectly
2️⃣ Design Modular Training Components
Break training into digestible modules:
Core values and company culture
Product/service knowledge
Customer service protocols
Operational procedures
Sales techniques
Problem-solving frameworks
3️⃣ Use Multiple Learning Methods
Not everyone learns the same way:
Hands-on demonstrations
Written materials and checklists
Video tutorials for visual learners
Role-playing scenarios
Shadowing experienced team members
Digital microlearning for reinforcement
4️⃣ Create Measurable Outcomes
Effective training has clear success metrics:
Define specific skills to be mastered
Create simple assessments to verify understanding
Establish performance benchmarks
Develop certification levels for advancement
Set timelines for skill acquisition
5️⃣ Implement Continuous Learning
Training isn't a one-time event:
Schedule regular refreshers and updates
Create a mentorship program
Recognize and reward skill development
Make learning part of your culture, not just compliance
6️⃣ Gather Feedback and Iterate
Your training system should evolve:
Ask employees what's working and what isn't
Measure the impact on key business metrics
Regularly update content based on real-world results
Test new approaches and keep what works
THIS WEEK'S ACTION STEPS
1️⃣ Identify your single biggest training gap — Is it product knowledge? Customer service? Operational procedures?
2️⃣ Create one 15-minute training module addressing that specific need
3️⃣ Implement a simple "before and after" measurement to track improvement
4️⃣ Schedule 10 minutes in your daily routine for team skill-building
5️⃣ Start a "training wins" channel in your team communication where improvements can be celebrated
💡 Remember: Consistent small training moments often outperform occasional marathon sessions. Build the habit of daily learning.
FINAL THOUGHT
The businesses that thrive don't just hire great people—they continuously develop them. Your investment in training today creates the customer experiences, operational excellence, and business growth of tomorrow.
