Here’s your 30-day employee retention checklist
Did you check in with your employees yet?
Because if you didn’t… you’re gambling with your best people.
Last week I told you the truth:
January is when your top employees decide if they’re staying… or leaving.
(If you’re new here, you can check out that post here)
And I’m following up because most business owners do the same thing every year:
They read the email.
They nod their head.
They say “that’s true.”
And then they do nothing.
Then February hits.
And suddenly they’re “shocked” someone quits.
So here’s the question:
✅ Did you check in with your key employees?
✅ Do you have a plan in place to keep them?
If your answer is “not really”… good.
At least you’re honest.
Now let’s fix it.
Your 30-Day Retention Checklist (Print This)
Week 1: TALK
☐ Make a list of your top 5 most important employees
☐ Schedule a 10-minute 1-on-1 with each one
☐ Ask this question:
“If you were running this business, what’s the one thing you’d change?”
☐ Do NOT defend yourself
☐ Do NOT explain
☐ Just listen
Week 2: LISTEN
☐ Write down the top 3 things you heard repeatedly
☐ Identify who’s engaged vs. who sounds checked out
☐ Ask one follow-up question:
“What would make your job easier right now?”
Week 3: ACT
☐ Pick ONE fix you can implement immediately
☐ Tell your team:
“I heard you. Here’s what we’re changing.”
☐ Make the change visible (schedule, process, tools, communication—whatever it is)
Week 4: REPEAT
☐ Do another 10-minute check-in
☐ Ask:
“Is this better than last month?”
☐ Keep the rhythm going
One rule: Don’t “Talk, Listen, Act”… and skip the ACT
Because that’s how you lose trust fast.
Most owners don’t lose employees because they’re “mean.”
They lose them because they’re inconsistent and unaware.
Your best employees don’t want perfection.
They want to feel seen, heard, and valued.
